Eastman academics contribute to new book on periodontal disease and systems biology

Eastman academics have contributed to a major new reference work which provides a scientific roadmap of the interactions which can lead to periodontal disease and introduces the concept of Systems Dentistry.  Periodontal disease is probably the most common chronic inflammatory and destructive human disease and is caused by an inappropriate host response to the multiple bacteria present in the human mouth.

The book, entitled Periodontal Medicine and Systems Biology, was edited by Professor Brian Henderson, Division of Microbial Diseases, and Professor Nikolaos Donos, Director of Research Strategy and Head of Periodontology, from the UCL Eastman Dental Institute along with Professor Robert Seymour, UCL Department of Mathematics and Professor Michael Curtis, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Its five sections cover; systems theory and cooperative bacteria, periodontitis – the clinical disease, periodontitis – coping with the microbiota, periodontitis – innate and acquired immunity and periodontitis – mechanisms of bone destruction.

Three of the book’s chapters were written by Eastman academics, reflecting the breadth of expertise of the Eastman faculty on the subject.  Professor Nikos Donos and Dr Francesco D’Aiuto outline the modern clinical picture; Drs Jonathan Pratten and Nicola Mordan describe the relationship of biofilm to periodontitis and Professor Brian Henderson and Dr Sean Nair detail bacterial osteolytic mediators.

Periodontal Medicine and Systems Biology is published by Wiley-Blackwell.

ISBN: 978-1-4051-2219-1.

Professor Mike Wilson edits new book on food constituents and oral health

Professor Mike Wilson’s new book entitled Food constituents and oral health: current status and future prospects, published by Woodhead Publishing/CRC press, provides a state-of-the-art overview of what is known about the role that the diet and its various constituents play in the oral health of humans. It summarises the ways in which such knowledge may be used to not only provide new ways of improving oral health but also to reduce the adverse effects of certain dietary constituents and practices.

The oral cavity consists of a complex system of tissues and organs whose collective functions are to select food that is acceptable for intake and to process that food into a form suitable for digestion by the rest of the gastrointestinal tract. Consequently, the maintenance of this multifunctional organ complex in a healthy state is very important to the wellbeing of the individual. Physical damage to any of the oral cavity’s many components may have a detrimental effect on one or more of its functions but, in addition, the large variety of dietary constituents processed by the mouth throughout the lifetime of the individual may also impact on its ability to perform its many tasks. It has long been known that dietary sugars can have a detrimental effect on oral health as they are a major factor in the aetiology of dental caries. However, it is now apparent that other constituents of the human diet can also affect oral health – some exerting a beneficial effect while others are potentially detrimental.

Contributions from UCL Eastman Dental Institute academics include a chapter on Viral and fungal infections of the oral cavity by Professor Stephen Porter and a chapter on Alcohol and oral health co-authored by Professor Crispian Scully CBE.

Dr Mark Lewis awarded £140,000 charitable donation for research into 3D models for the study of ameloblastoma

The research group led by Mark Lewis has been awarded a grant to appoint a fully-funded PhD student within the Division of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. The funding is from a charitable donation through the UCL Development Office with an additional UK Government uplift; the donor approached a number of academic centres for proposals based on their research interests eventually awarding the project to the Eastman. The project led by PI Mark Lewis along with Vehid Salih, Stefano Fedele and Stephen Porter is to model the pathogenesis of ameloblastoma (AM), the most common odontogenic (tooth development) tumour. The intention is for the appointee to use state of the art rapid tissue fabrication techniques to create 3D tissue engineered flat bone that is analogous to that in the human jaw. Ameloblastoma cells would be introduced to this model to act as a test-bed for various therapeutic molecules. 3D in vitro models offer the best means of studying the mechanisms by which AM cells invade surrounding bone as they are more sophisticated than simple models of cell cultures, but less expensive and complicated than the use of animals. The model could also help study the effects of suitable anti-cancer drugs.

Professor Michael Wilson and Dr Derren Ready consult on the making of Co-Existence, a new commission for the Wellcome Trust

Professor Michael Wilson, Professor of Microbiology at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and Dr Derren Ready, Clinical Scientist, UCLH NHS Foundation Trust consulted on the latest art installation to adorn the Wellcome Trust headquarters in the Euston Road in London. The new work by German-born product designer Julia Lohmann is providing bold viewing for passers-by.

Entitled 'Co-existence', it is the latest commission for the Wellcome Trust's window display and consists of 9000 petri dishes brightly illuminated with colours and designs that form the shape of two naked women lying head-to-head.

Whilst working on the concept, Julia Lohmann consulted Professor Wilson, whose recent book 'Bacteriology of Humans: An ecological perspective' describes the bacterial communities that live on the body. Information from the book was used to identify those bacterial species that inhabit particular regions of the body. Dr Ready grew and photographed colonies of the various bacteria used in the display - a total of 750 images were produced.

Professor Wilson commented: "Only one in ten of the cells comprising a human being is mammalian - the rest are microbes and multicellular organisms. This symbiotic association between mammalian cells and microbes forms the stable, living structure which we think of as the human body. So, in reality, the human body is not only a beautifully integrated assembly of organ systems, it is also a complex ecosystem that provides a variety of environments - each of which is populated by a distinct microbial community. A symbiotic existence is probably the most common form of life on this planet and we humans are popular hosts. I'm delighted that Julia has used this concept as an inspiration for her work."

Professor Wilson and Dr Ready attended the official opening reception held on Monday 9th February. For those wanting to explore more fully the science behind the art-work, copies of Professor Wilson's book were on sale during the event.

UCL Eastman research receives support from the EPSRC-funded Industrial Doctoral Training Centre in Molecular Modelling & Materials Science at UCL

Dr Peter Brett and Professor Nikos Donos were part of an inter-departmental UCL bid which has been awarded continued EPSRC-funding for the Industrial Doctoral Training Centre in Molecular Modelling & Materials Science based at UCL. The funding for the Centre totals £6M and will enable 50 graduates to undertake DEng programmes at UCL over the next 5 years. The project submitted by Dr Peter Brett (PI) and Professor Nikos Donos of UCL Eastman entitled “The enrichment of adult stem cell populations for osteogenic capacity” has secured commercial sponsorship of 30K for the Centre and will attract one PhD studentship under the scheme. Opportunities exist for UCL Eastman to benefit from further studentships under this exciting scheme. The bid was coordinated Prof N de Leeuw in the UCL Department of Chemistry. EDI celebrates an excellent outcome in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise

The Results of the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) covering the period 2001-2007 have just been published. 14 dental schools in the UK submitted a return. When RAE quality and volume measures are combined in what the Times Higher Education Supplement has called the “research power” score1, UCL Eastman Dental Institute was ranked the 2nd best performing return submitted in Dentistry.

The RAE results show that 95% of the Eastman’s research is of an international standard which has made or is likely to make a significant contribution to knowledge, theory, practice or policy; 60% of this is classed as internationally excellent making a highly significant contribution while 15% is world leading.

The outcome is particularly pleasing as we submitted 42.40 FTE staff representing over 90% of all eligible academic staff - a submission percentage that compares highly favourably with other institutes and that truly reflects the breadth of excellence of all our staff.

UCL Eastman ranked 3rd in terms of the number of world leading 4* researchers returned, 2nd in terms of the number of highly performing 4* and 3* researchers returned and 2nd in terms of the number of researchers doing work recognized as at the international standard.

The Eastman’s research will continue to prosper as we strengthen multi-disciplinary collaborations within the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences and capitalize on translational research outcomes bringing real benefits for the oral health of the nation.

Commenting on the performance of the Schools as a whole Professor Ed Byrne said “The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) are now published. The results confirm the School of Life & Medical Sciences' (SLMS) standing as the UK's main research 'power house' in biomedicine and life sciences. Every member of the School, academic, technical, administrative, should feel proud of this achievement. http://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/news-articles/0812/08121804

The Higher Education Funding Council for England commented “the results confirm the dominant position that universities and colleges in the United Kingdom hold in international research”; John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, said: "The latest RAE reinforces the UK's position as a world leader in research and I congratulate our universities and colleges for achieving such outstanding results.
